“How you show up anywhere, is how you show up everywhere!”

How you show anywhere, is how you show up everywhere!

I was sitting in a room full of coaches a few years back, when the facilitator at the time made the comment, “How you show up anywhere, is how you show up everywhere!” I paused, repeated that in my head several times, and from that moment, knew that this was what I wanted to coach individuals around!

Looking back over your career, what one person’s actions stands out most vividly in your mind? Was that person’s actions in your mind positive or negative? For most, the actions remembered most vividly, will be the negative ones. After spending over 25 years in corporate America, I remember many amazing individuals that I have had the opportunity to work with, a few “behaving badly” scenarios, but in particular, one person that showed up in a way that will forever be etched into my mind!
I was in an upper management position, heading up a large IT applications group. Our network has been hit by a virus, and chaos broke out everywhere! It seemed that as soon as teams would come together to find a solution, they would bounce off in the opposite direction from frustration and strategic turmoil!
In an attempt to bring the teams back together with a strategic plan, I scheduled a meeting with one of our “leaders”. Soon after the meeting began, my colleague paused, looked me straight in the eyes and said, “Jeannine, you know what your problem is? You aren’t very good at being submissive.” Without skipping a beat he then added, “If you would like to continue to work here, you will either learn to be submissive, or you will be looking for another job!”…..Silence.
Wow! Okay, I was speechless. I knew that I needed to wrap it up, and quickly, as I had no idea where this could end up! I smiled, asked him if there was anything else that he would like to discuss, and waited for the sign that he was through. As I stepped up to open the door, he quickly rushed around his desk to open the door for me. As I exited his office, I barely remember him complimenting me on how my jewelry always perfectly matched my clothes, and how did I do that?
As with life in general, out of bad can always come good, if you stand strong to sift through the wreckage. Although the words were disturbing to me at the time, they also triggered in my mind that it was time for me to do what I was passion about. It was time for me to coach others to move forward into how they wanted to show up. It was time to partner with individuals who sincerely wanted to make a difference, that really wanted to lead!
Whether you are an executive, a mechanic, a stay at home mom, a project manager, a nurse, a teacher, or anyone who deals within individuals each and every day, we all need to give thought into how we are showing up! In some manner of speaking, we are all leaders, and how we show up anywhere, and everywhere, effects everyone that we come in contact with.

How are you showing up, and how’s that working for you? Accountability is an amazing art!

I would love to hear about your experiences of how people show up amazingly, and your biggest challenges when they don’t show up well!

Keep moving forward and remember ……..“How you show up anywhere, is how you show up everywhere!”

                                                   ……show up fabulous!
